Abstract
The relevance of the research topic lies in the need to reform the education system of Ukraine, improve it, improve the level of quality, which is associated with an alarming situation in the country, a sharp deterioration in the health and physical fitness of student youth. Insufficient attention is paid to the priority use of track and field exercises as a way to increase the effectiveness of physical education of students. The purpose of the study is to reveal the influence of athletics means on the physical fitness of students of pedagogical institutions of higher education. Research methods: theoretical analysis and generalization of data from scientific and methodological literature; pedagogical observations and experiments; testing the physical fitness of students; methods of mathematical statistics. Research results. The basis for the formation of the experimental methodology was the following provisions, namely: the educational process should have a developmental and health-improving orientation; systematic development of physical qualities, an integrated approach to teaching the technique of track and field exercises and the development of physical qualities; construction of thematic blocks of classes (content modules), which made it possible to consistently, concentratedly master certain motor actions and systematically repeat those previously studied; wide use of the game and competitive method in solving problems of the development of physical qualities; as a means of physical education, use both aerobic and anaerobic exercises of moderate and high intensity; means and methods of physical education are adequate to the morpho-functional characteristics of students. When teaching students the technique of track and field exercises, the following rules were observed: to teach exercises only in the recommended sequence; gradually achieve the required level of physical and mental performance; increase the efficiency of solving the problems of improving physical fitness with optimal load. Findings. Comparison of the final results between the experimental and control groups after the experiment prove their significant difference
